2026 Federal Pre-Budget Submission

2026 Federal Pre-Budget Submission

The National Initiative for Eating Disorders (NIED) is calling on the federal government to strengthen Canada’s response to eating disorders and related mental health challenges through targeted investments in the upcoming federal budget.

In our 2026 pre-budget submission to the Government of Canada, we are calling for real action for millions of Canadians living with an eating disorder or disordered eating.

NIED's Recommendations

Recommendations made by NIED for the 2026 Federal Budget were made with the intention of highlighting the urgent need for improved access to specialized treatment, stronger caregiver support, and increased research funding to address the growing impact of eating disorders across the country.

In total, NIED made 4 recommendations calling on the Government of Canada to:

1. Establish a $5.2 billion Canada Mental Health Transfer to provinces and territories to expand access to mental health and eating disorder services.

2. Increase federal support for caregivers, who play a critical role in recovery but often face significant emotional and financial burdens.

3. Invest $25 million over five years in research on disordered eating, treatment approaches, and the impacts on caregivers and marginalized communities.

4. Provide funding to update the Canadian Eating Disorders Standards to reflect current evidence and improve consistency of care across Canada.
